Many people have heard of marine upholstery. On the other hand, though, there are a lot of people who have no idea what it is. In simple terms, marine upholstery is upholstery made to hold up in boats and in other locations that are exposed to the water. Many materials can be used as marine upholstery, but there are characteristics those materials must meet in order for them to be truly effective.

When it comes to marine upholstery, there are a number of options. By and large, though, most of those materials can be classified as either fabrics or as vinyls. What they all have in common, though, are that they meet the requirements for upholstery. They each should be able to withstand moisture, exposure to the weather, and constant exposure to hot sun when the boats are on the water.

Because it is quick drying, vinyl makes a great upholstery. Since it is essentially a plastic, vinyl allows you to expose the seats of your boat to wet bathing suits as well as spray from the water. As soon as it gets wet, a quick wipe with a towel will allow you to dry your vinyl upholstery.

There are, though, many fabrics that also act well in the role of marine upholstery. Most are what is known as laminated fabrics. This makes them better suited for upholstery use because they resist water while still maintaining their integrity in the heat. Additionally, unlike with vinyl, you can sit on them without third degree burns when they have been out in the sun. That is always a bonus for the weekend boater.

As you can see, marine upholstery comes in a number of versions. While most of these come in fabric and vinyls, there is a great deal of variation available. You can get many colors or designs. In the end, it is simply a matter of what you most enjoy and most want for your boat.
